Inspiration
Inspiration for this Series in General were the artworks of Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) an American artist. Ellsworth Kelly started to create artwork based off of abract shapes he saw in the everyday. These shapes were mostly organic shapes we see every day such as leaves and seen mostly in his work the dark and simplistic shapes that shadows casted. His piece called Black over Yellow is an ispiration for the color scheme of the piece overall with darker colors contrasting heavily with the bright Yellow.
My second artistic inspiration is an japanese Illustrator by the name of Hirohiko Araki and I have always had an affinity twords his recent works. I chose this panel in particular for it's composition and setting that being the Famouns art museum the Louvre.The setting of an art museum for this piece was interesting and I picked it to help with the theme of presentation on a teachers part as they have to show their students what the world is about and this ties into the other inspiration. American progress a piece created in 1872 during westword expansion had heavily implied theme of manifest destiny. Manifest destiny was a concept mainly associated creating your own fate and that resonates with the modern attitudes teacher's have twords student's development of their future pursuits in life. |
Another inspiration for the meaning behind the title was the 8 stages of development by Erik Erickson who was a professor at Yale and Harvard. The stage that I wanted to focus on in particular was the fourth stage that has to do with Industry and inferiority with the main idea being the delopment of skills and interest and the pursuit of such things being impacted by teachers and peers.By groeing our interest I decided to chose the color yellow because of it's optimistic tone. In all I want to combine the setting used by Araki the colors and composition of Kelly and the symbolism of American Progress in my piece.

Planning Sketches
I used the method of 3 planning sketches testing composition and practicing subject anatomy. The sketch at the top was good but during my reasearch my inspiration switched from Ellsworth Kelly's "High Yellow" to Black Over Yellow. The bottom two sketches were testing how I would implicate the color scheme and composition of Kelly's piece with the insiration from Araki. I did like the one to the right at first and made the Final sketch based around it but I didnt like the composition and the bottom left one had a composition that made more sense and was a nice twist on the inspiration by Araki. That particular composition also opened my mind to using American Progress as an Inspiration.

Experimentation

The clouds was something I originally was going to do with layer as in layering colored pencil colors on top of each other. When I went to go use the white paint pen for highlights I saw it mixed with the other color. The way it worked was to aplly a bit of white paint but with a dry end of the pen spread it around to blend. I saw the application of this technique I used it for the clouds throughout the piece. I was very satisfied with end product of this technique.

Process
I began with the prep with a palette of black, grey, lemon yellow, and a lighter hue of Lemon Yellow that was made from white and Lemon yellow mixed together. Then I began with a light sketch begining with the two subjects. This time I decided to gesture the two onto the paper instead of a direct eye transfer. After the gesture I cleaned it up as nessicary and scribbled lightly over areas that needed shading. From here I watered a flat tip brush and started painting the two subjects first with a base of the lighter yellow then using the normal hue to shade the subjects. Afterward I painted the bottom plain with a dried brush as to ensure that there wasnt any opacity and therefore a mor solid hue as to contrast from the subjects. I then inked the subjects first with a fine tipped pen hatching at areas that were shaded and using a fine pointed pen fill in the hair. Afterwards I moved on to filling in the rest of the background with the black wall and grey ceiling. Moving on to the painting I transfered seperate aspects from American progress to my piece and inked cerain aspects (mostly the live aspects of the piece i.e wildlife and people). I used layering for most of the background with the mountains and plains but I used a technique previously mentioned to blend the clouds together. After that I painted the frame and finished the piece
Reflection
This was a very satisfying piece to work on I was very glad with the finished product and had a blast making it. From using gesture for the transfer to finding the paint pn technique working on this piece was very satisfying. The freedom I took with this piece and making something different from the original inspiration of Araki was something I was pleased with showing my growth for things like focus and emphasis in a composition. Kelly's inspiration although small in the form of color had a positive impact on the final project with the color being something that stands out immediatly with the boldness of the black contrasting with the yellow. American Progress and the 4th stage of psycosocial development worked excellently with the choice of destiny mixing with the exploration and development of skills and hobbies. I can proudly say that this is one of my favorite pieces from this series.

I drew the conclusion from Erickson and Ghast that your circumstances and situation really do have an impact on what skills you develop how you decide to grow as a person.

The central theme for the most part was that your surroundings and situation have a big impact on both your actions and interest whether that be the pursuit of Manifest Destiny or just finding out what you like to do.
